Scotch & Soda is an unusual name for a fashion brand. Apparently, the name was inspired by a simple trick with a coin, which came from one of the simplest and most classic magic tricks
Scotch & Soda represents Amsterdam, its fashion, and its eclectic mood. Like its very cosmopolitan culture, its fashion is also very inspirational. Scotch & Soda takes things from all over the world and mixes them up to create a unique style.
What is Scotch & Soda clothing?
Scotch & Soda don't believe they need an identity. They just do what they do and some people identify with them. They wear their clothes and people like them. It’s a symbiosis between their clientele and them.
They don't believe their fashion is the best and say there is no best, saying German fashion is better than Paris or Milan isn't the best way to look at it for them. They just give their take on fashion and from that they find that many people seem to like it.
The creative minds behind the brand
Marlou van Engelen is the brand’s Creative Director and she sets the tone for their 100-person design studio and provides the inspiration. What they normally do is find a place in the world or a point in history and then use key people or things associated with it to create a story in clothing.
When they look for a theme, for example, the 1920s and Norwegian explorers, this becomes the starting point and then the artists will start to evolve the theme from there, with every artist moving in their own direction. The team will start collecting things, patterns, and colours, whatever represents the key theme, and use it to create their collections.
Their design studio can be found inside a beautiful 17th-century church, turned into a place full of things that represent their inspirations. Their designs change every season and so do their themes. Last time their theme was about the desert in Morocco and following this, it was the Congolese jungle in the Congo.
